About Us
Bryngwyn School is situated between the villages of Dafen and Felinfoel, some two miles from the centre of Llanelli. It is one of five Comprehensive Schools in the Llanelli Area. Three are English medium mixed (11-16) in character, one an 11-18 Welsh Bilingual School and the fifth is an 11-16 Roman Catholic V.A. Comprehensive School.
Bryngwyn School was opened in 1977, and stands in 32 acres of ground. At present the School population consists of over 800 pupils drawn from the feeder Schools of Hendy, Llangennech, Bryn, Brynteg, Dafen, Ysgol y Felin, Swiss Valley, Five Roads, Old Road, Furnace and Penygaer. However a number of pupils are drawn from Schools outside our catchment area, with as many as sixteen primary schools sending to Bryngwyn. The catchment area includes two Community First wards and approximately 1 in 5 pupils is eligible for free school meals.
The School enjoys extensive sporting facilities and amenities usually associated with a modern school. For example, we have nine tennis courts, a running track, a red gra hockey pitch, several rugby pitches, a fitness suite, a gymnasium and a multi purpose sports hall.
Academically, the School has a management structure based on departments. Regular Departmental meetings take place each month. All staff are encouraged to become involved in policy and decision making processes by joining various working parties and committees as appropriate. The Senior Management Team consists of the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, an Assistant Headteacher and 4 Directors of Learning.
First Year pupils (Year 7) are initially placed in mixed ability groups but later, they are placed into sets for Mathematics and English. Setting is introduced for other subjects at KS3 when deemed appropriate. Pastorally, the School is divided horizontally into year groups with each year under the supervision of a Year Tutor. There is also a house system which encourages competitions between pupils.
The School has always prided itself on the excellence of its students and staff. This pride comes from an appreciation of the wide and varied contributions which both staff and pupils make to the community within and beyond the confines of the School. It comes from the high standards of academic achievement which have been establish and demonstrated through examination performance.
At Bryngwyn we believe all pupils can achieve success, whatever their particular talents and abilities. We expect all pupils to achieve and we provide all pupils with the opportunity and encouragement to develop their full potential. A wide variety of learning opportunities is provided with the aim of motivating and challenging all pupils in a way which recognises their different aptitudes and aspirations and values their achievement.

All three are monitored regularly during the year and feedback provided for pupils and parents. We aim to reward high standards of achievement, attendance and behaviour while demonstrating that there are clearly defined consequences for under-achievement, poor attendance and negative attitudes and behaviour.
The School has received RAISE funding for the last thee years and the additional resources have been used very successfully to improve pupils’ basic and key skills and to develop their emotional literacy.
There is a strong emphasis on the development of basic skills across the curriculum. The school has qualified for the Basis Skills Quality Award in recognition of the work being undertaken in this area. Key Skills are firmly embedded in the curriculum at Bryngwyn School and are an important factor in our school improvement plans. All six key skills have been accredited across KS3 and KS4. From September 2009 the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification is being introduced at Key Stage 4 and the success achieved in key skills provides an excellent foundation.
Bryngwyn is an innovative community-focused school where we recognise the importance of out of hours learning experiences for our pupils. The school’s provision was described as ‘outstanding’ by ESTYN and its success has been recognised nationally.
